Outcome
Combining the past and present through printmaking.
Through most of this experiment—especially the screenprinting—I could engage physically to bring sense of life and texture to the participants’ photographs, photo stories and typographical development. This printing technique provides opportunities to merge the past with the present.
Omani authorities have frequently emphasised the need to preserve a careful balance between two paramount factors: the acceptance of modernity and the retention of old established values. This was realised by using screen printing as a medium to create harmony between the past and the present. The aesthetic quality of the process, from bold form to textured impression to intentional offset alignment, has become ubiquitous in contemporary creative industry. However, it is the beautiful, rich sense of life quality of the prints themselves that makes them so desirable in our increasingly digital world. Therefore, screenprinting provided me with the ability to produce artworks that I could create using old printing techniques, along with photographs provided by the participants and created digitally. In this sense, I could combine the past and present in the final artwork.
While producing this recent artwork, I tried to be mindful of the country’s past while producing an artwork that is contemporary and present. I attempted to visually represent the Omani national identity as it was visualised by the participants, but I used screen printing to bring texture to the artwork and make it more present.
